Trainees/Graduates

There is no such thing as a 'typical' Freshfields lawyer. Our international focus, wide array of practice areas and varied clients demand individuals with differing skills and interests. Potential and diversity are much more important to the long-term viability of our practices than recruiting to a set formula.

However, if you are going to work with us, you will need a strong academic ability, a broad range of skills and a good record of achievement in other areas. Some qualities of particular interest and relevance to us are described below. Qualities we believe we can identify through your activities and interests.

Analytical ability/creative thinking

The sort of work undertaken in the firm means that we need to recruit those who can think clearly and identify the key aspects of a potential issue. You will need to be able to explain complex issues in simple language and make sense of a complicated situation. We look for people who can see alternative ways of approaching and solving problems.

Determination and drive

The career path you are thinking of following is not always an easy one. It will be intellectually satisfying, but will ask a lot of you. We are therefore eager for those individuals who can fit a lot into their lives and who have plenty of enthusiasm.

An assured and confident personality and plenty of drive and enthusiasm are important. We value individuality, imagination and innovation in our lawyers - and an ability to empathise with clients to provide effective commercial solutions to their business objectives.

Curiosity/flexibility

Our strategy of pursuing the highest quality, most stimulating work means that our people need to enjoy dealing with new ideas and adapting to new challenges. You will need to be adaptable enough to see the big picture as clearly as the detail.

Teamwork/interpersonal skills

Plenty of activities require teamwork, and it means far more than simply appearing on a sports pitch or turning up at a team meeting. You will need to work with a huge range of colleagues and clients so your approach and interaction with others are of the utmost importance.

Organisation and discipline

Our lawyers manage huge transactions in multiple jurisdictions. They need to keep up with developments in the law, their clients' businesses and the mandates they are working on. This means multitasking and not losing your cool are part of keeping track from day to day.

Commercial sense

We think this is something that usually develops with time and work experience. What we look for is the potential to develop commercial sense.
