Every year we're joined by a number of qualified lawyers. These are associates who qualified in other jurisdictions such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, the US and the UK. Some are PRC-qualified lawyers who have worked for PRC law firms and join us as legal consultants. And others are PRC-qualified lawyers who may also have gained an LLM in the US or another country and may also have passed the PRC bar exams. They join us as international legal consultants. Then there are those who have the same qualifications as an international legal consultant but have also passed the bar exams in the US and have an impressive track record of relevant work experience. They join us as associates.
There are opportunities for you to work in Hong Kong,
even if you don't have a Hong Kong qualification
You can join us in Hong Kong as a Registered Foreign lawyer. We
have lots of registered foreign lawyers working with us. They have
qualified in Germany, France, Australia, the US and the UK. Because
of the international nature of our work, we value the expertise you
bring from your jurisdictions and the diversity you add to our
teams.
You must be able to speak and write English
well
English is the universal language in all our offices and in
communicating with clients, so you must be able to demonstrate a
high level of English proficiency. If English is not your first
language, we ask you to fill in a language
proficiency form.
And it helps if you speak Mandarin
A substantial and increasing element of our work involves the PRC,
so fluency in Mandarin is becoming more important. If you are able
to communicate with clients efficiently by both speaking Mandarin
and writing Chinese, it opens up more opportunities for you.
We advise associates who are interested in joining us to take steps to improve their Mandarin skills (spoken, reading and writing). We will happily sponsor language training for anyone who is keen to improve.
We don't want to turn away good lawyers who aren't proficient in Chinese and it's still true that there are some practice areas that don't demand Mandarin. So if you have any concerns about your language ability, just talk to us.
You can also qualify as a Hong Kong
lawyer
Once you've joined us you may decide to qualify as a Hong Kong
lawyer. If so, we will sponsor and support you financially while
you study and sit the Overseas Lawyers Qualification Exams.

If you would like to have an informal chat with one of us to discuss what it is like living and working in Hong Kong, Shanghai or Beijing, do contact us.
You will have opportunities to travel with your
work
We work on transactions in all parts of greater China from all
three of our China offices. Depending on your experience, you are
likely to have opportunities to travel both within Mainland China
and to and from Hong Kong on work assignments. Our three China
offices work together as one integrated practice, and our work
often demands a team with skills from each office.
If you join us as an associate, you will also have opportunities to travel to Europe, America and the Middle East, as well as within China and the rest of Asia.
We help you develop your career still
further
Even though you may have been practising for several years, we
still provide you with 'off-the-job' training. This includes
international induction programmes, update sessions with teams and
practice groups, residential development programmes and
international conferences. As your career progresses and you take
on more responsibility, we also help you to develop your team,
project and management skills, so that you fulfil your
potential.
