In 2011 we have six to eight positions available for legal consultants in Beijing and in Shanghai.
To be a legal consultant with us you need to be a PRC LLB graduate. Some of our legal consultants have also obtained an LLM from a top law school in China and passed the PRC bar exams.
We prefer an applicant to have gained a minimum of GPA 3.5 or equivalent. It also helps if you have worked for a PRC law firm or have had some intern experience.
You will need to be proficient in
spoken and written English
As English is used as the universal language throughout our
network of offices and in communications with our clients, you will
need a high level of English proficiency. In assessing this, we
will take into account your IELTS or TOEFL scores.
If you decide to apply for a position with us, we will also ask you to fill in our language proficiency form.
You will work closely with
associates and partners on transactions
Regular tasks include due diligence, legal research and legal
drafting. Working with us, you can expect to attend meetings with
our associates and partners, deal direct with clients and other
professionals, and be involved in managing and executing
transactions from start to finish.
Your training depends on your
ambition
As a minimum, we provide an induction course for new legal
consultants. This introduces you to the firm and equips you with
the basic skills and knowledge to start your legal career with
us.
You then have comprehensive on-the-job training as you work on transactions and hone your skills under the supervision of our partners and associates.
We also have a strong mentoring
programme for all legal consultants
We allocate a senior associate to each legal consultant. We
encourage you to raise any issues of concern with mentors, whether
they are in relation to working practices, dealing with clients,
workload or any other issues.
We offer LLM sponsorship
opportunities
If you are keen to become an international legal consultant we
will sponsor you to study for an LLM in the US. We offer this
opportunity on a merit basis to bright legal consultants, who have
been with us for a minimum of two years.
We also allow all legal
consultants four weeks' study leave for the PRC
bar
A few legal consultants also go on to take the US bar exams. Once
you are US qualified, you have more opportunities. The work you do
is more varied and you will probably get the opportunity to work in
Hong Kong.
Legal consultants have the
opportunity to travel across Mainland China
We work on transactions in all parts of China from all three of
our China offices. The three offices work together as one
integrated practice, and we often assemble teams with lawyers from
each office.
Some legal consultants are keen to
be promoted
We encourage the development of all our people and we are
especially keen to provide promising legal consultants with the
opportunity to work in our Hong Kong office.
If you have the appetite and talent to progress beyond legal consultant to international legal consultant and then to associate, we will provide you with legal technical training, English drafting, negotiation, legal research skills, communication and interpersonal skills training.
