Gregorio Fuentes – IT assistant

Four years ago I made the move from a global IT company to Freshfields. I guess I was expecting much the same atmosphere and working environment. Instead I've discovered what international really means, both professionally and personally.

You only have to take a look at the three members of my team; one from England, one from Italy and me, a Milan resident originally from Ecuador. I deal with people all over the world, not just the 129 or so staff in the Milan office: lots of our IT systems come from London and so I spend a fair bit of time with them on the phone. I help our people resolve their technology issues. I've become an expert in so many different areas - from specialised legal and accounting software to operating systems and disaster recovery. I always keep up to date with what's happening in technology, thanks to the regular training courses that Freshfields send me on.

Because we use such varied technology, there's little chance I'll get bored in this job. It might mean something simple, like fixing a printer, or something critical to the success of a client pitch, like dealing with a broken projector. I love situations like that, when my adrenalin is pumping. A few months ago our server crashed one Friday night, which meant no one could access documents. So it was IT to the rescue: by Saturday morning we'd had a new server shipped from London, and we'd worked through the night to get it installed.

And once I've finished helping at work? I love to relax by playing in my heavy metal band - techies have rhythm too!
