Ida Bassano – Knowledge management lawyer

I find it hard to pick out my best time at Freshfields because it always feels like there's something new and exciting around the corner. When I joined Freshfields I was looking for more work-life balance, and they gave me the flexibility to work part-time around my young children. At the time, knowledge management was a very new area, and in fact Milan had recently created this position.

I grasped the opportunity and developed a brand knowledge management section in corporate and real estate - and the chances to do things differently keep on coming. The current economic situation is actually working in our favour. We're doing our normal work, sharing knowledge and answering queries, but we're also getting extra time to create fresh information for training and new recruits.

I'm always looking for ways to improve what we do and how we share the information, whether that's developing new initiatives for the intranet or attending training courses where I can hone my communication skills. Internal training and development is quite new to Freshfields Milan, so we have been able to choose what we want to learn and have had the full support of the firm. And I know there's help wherever I turn, I can pick up the phone to my colleagues internationally, or catch up with the other knowledge management lawyers on our monthly phone calls. We use the intranet and new databases to collaborate throughout the world, plus we share and develop information as a group on away-days. Freshfields lawyers are my clients, and I help them understand what I can offer them, building up trust so they come to me when they need information.
