Curiosity and a thirst for knowledge are common qualities at Freshfields but to a patent litigator they are vital. When I have a new case, I often travel all over the world to meet the most eminent professors in their field, who explain to me what their specific area of technology is all about. Patent litigation is a truly international part of the law, so although I'm based in the Netherlands, I probably spend a day and a half a week in other countries, sitting in courts beside the local barrister and offering my advice.
I joined Freshfields just after graduation, in the newly opened Netherlands office. I liked the idea of working for a young firm with real ambition to grow, where I could contribute in a very direct way.
I have enjoyed every stage of my progress through Freshfields, and in May 2009, I will become the Netherlands' first 'home-grown' partner. The selection process takes a year, and during that time senior partners come from all over the world to meet you. It is something that is time consuming for them and it really demonstrates Freshfields' commitment to creating excellence in their staff.
